With reference to your letter 7927/1908 of the

25th of March last, I am directed by Secretary Sir E.

Grey to transmit to you to be laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies a copy of a despatch

from His Majesty's Minister at Peking on the subject

of the proposal for a mutual

undertaking by the Hong-

Kong and Canton Governments not to mint any more subsidiary coins until the Canton and HongKong coins

in circulation have recovered their face-value and

then to limit any further issue to what is necessary

for currency purposes.

You will perceive that a request has been addressed by the Wai-wu-Pu to the Board of Finance and

to the Canton Viceroy to take satisfactory measures to

cope with the existing evil.
